The Stargate Project: OpenAI, SoftBank and Oracle Pledge Up to $500B for AI Infrastructure

On January 21, 2025, OpenAI, SoftBank and Oracle announced the Stargate Project at the White House: up to $500 billion invested over four years to build AI infrastructure for OpenAI in the United States, with $100 billion deployed immediately.

Equity funders include SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle and MGX — SoftBank holds financial responsibility (Masayoshi Son as chairman) while OpenAI runs operations. The first data center landed in Abilene, Texas, with plans for up to 20 large campuses.

It was the largest single commitment in AI infrastructure history, elevating the compute race to national-strategy level. Microsoft, Google and Meta followed with capex raises of their own, pushing global AI data-center investment into the trillion-dollar era across 2025-2026.
